Topic/Skill: In this lesson we worked on listening comprehension and common English idioms
Feedback provided to tutee: The tutee brought words and phrases she noted down from the English T.V. shows she watches that she could not understand, and I provided the meaning of them. Then, the tutee created her own examples of the words/ phrases to ensure she truly understood the meaning. Additionally, we watched a few different clips of Friends to work on listening comprehension through listening comprehension questions and define a few different common idioms. I wrote down the phrases I wanted to work on before the clips and then had the tutee try to guess what they meant based on context. After the idioms were defined, the tutee came up with different examples to use them in and I provided feedback on what situations would work adequately. Additionally, I provided feedback to the tutee on different American culture questions, for example the typical protocol on ordering at restaurants and moving away from home.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: In this lesson the tutee asked me a technical grammar questions that I did not know the answer to. I learned that it is ok to not know the answer right away, but I needed to use example scenarios to explain it right away and note down the question so I could provide a more technical answer the next time we are together. It is more effective to answer to the best of my knowledge and let the tutee I do not know it exactly then to give the wrong answer. This built trust between me and the tutee because we realized we are both learning together and that it is okay to not know everything being asked, for myself and the tutee.
