Topic/Skill: Listening
Teacher Presentation: Felicia Ciappetta
Classroom Management: There were just a few students in class. Students were sectioned off into groups of two (plus myself in one of them) for the classroom activities.
Materials: Textbook, a computer, and speakers.
Student Participation: After listening to a prepared recording of several people speaking, students got into groups to answer questions about the audio. They would discuss their answers together, and reason with each other as to what the correct answer was. After this, the instructor would call on students at random to present their answer to the questions in the textbook.
Feedback Provided: The instructor listened to the way the students were struggling and replayed the audio multiple times for them. Feedback provided to the students was mostly based around pronunciation. Students were asked to repeat words that they said which were incomprehensible, to practice their accents. When students gave the wrong answer to the questions, they were not just told they were wrong. They were asked to explain their reasoning to account for having understood the audio but misremembered. Most students performed well, needing little feedback beyond accent correction. Only one student struggled far behind the rest, and it was because of him that the instructor played the audio multiple times.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: In a listening class, the instructor spends much of class entirely silent. I suppose it should be obvious that the point of a listening class is to let the students do just that. But I had expected the instructor to interact more with the students. I see now that it is important not to hold a student's hand through a listening exercise, however. It does not do well to give them the answer to things. It is better to have them reason it out for themself, so that they at least practice explanation/summary even when their listening fails.
