Topic/Skill: This was the first time I had met with this tutee, so the main focus was on getting to know one another better to make our tutoring environment a comfortable one where we can both speak confidently. The tutoring session included assessment and diagnosis on the tutees skills in order to move forward with effective lesson plans that pertained to the tutees goals and learning styles. This allowed for feedback regarding American culture and to provide answers to questions regarding why Americans do things a certain way and where our culture stems from.
Feedback provided to tutee: I gave lots of feedback to the tutee on better vocabulary to use in certain scenarios and what the proper grammar of a sentence should be. We also had a lot of discussion about the differences in cultures between America and the tutee’s host culture in China.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This lesson we discussed some of the hardest times to learn English or to understand American culture. The tutee explained that ordering at American restaurants is difficult considering you have to order an entree and sides separately and find them located from different areas of the menu and there are rarely any pictures of the food. I found this interesting because I have never really considered how that is different from other cultures. Additionally, the tutee discussed how it can be extremely hard to decipher through different accents or slang, from people within the U.S., rarely do people speak the same way. This was also an interesting perspective to gain that students learning English have to understand prescriptive grammar and descriptive grammar alike, while understanding how different accents all speak in “correct” English but it can sound completely different.
