Topic/Skill: This tutoring session served as an assessment and diagnostic for the rest of the session with the tutee considering it was our first session in the semester. The majority included getting to know one another, discussing what areas the tutee wanted to improve in, and setting goals for the session together.

Feedback provided to tutee: I provided feedback to Bruce after certain sentences he struggled to get his thoughts out by providing different words he could use and explaining them and corrected his grammar on sentences where he was not sure. I did this by repeating it back to him the correct way of asking a question so he would restate the sentence correctly. Additionally, I provided feedback on his goals and how to make them more precise for his learning needs based upon our conversation.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: When working with Bruce, he mentioned that Americans are often too nervous to correct ESL speakers on their grammar in efforts to not be rude and because the native speakers can still understand the goal of what they were trying to say. However, he went on to say he appreciates the feedback because he wants to sound like a native speaker and speak naturally. This conversation made me more comfortable with providing feedback and understanding that my role is to help the tutee the best I can, even if it is not always the most comfortable. After this session, I felt more comfortable tutoring an ESL teacher and being more confident in my role.
